Diagnostic description:
Entirely black or dark brown, including knob of halter; cheek with distinct subocular crescent (Sabrosky 1983)
Taxon biology:
Larvae are saprophagous and coprophagous. Adults visit Apiaceae flowers and adult females are kleptoparasitic on spiders or predaceous insects. The prey are usually honey bees but sometimes also other insects.
In Greece specimens were collected in June/July with Malaise traps as well as Quercus and Ostyra tree banana traps; 40-905 m.
In the Netherlands specimens were collected in August in a beer trap in an oak tree at 4 m height.
In Czechia specimens were collected in traps baited with pig carcass, on decaying groats and fruit, on Festuca rubra, and emerging from wasp nest.
