Milichiella hendeli
Milichiella hendeli was collected in conspecific swarms, in Malaise traps, on Tamarix gallica L. (Tamaricaceae), from Lonicera flowers (Caprifoliaceae), and specimens of the Mexican variety from hollow coconut logs (Arecaceae).
Differs from congeners in the combination of subshiny black mesonotum and scutellum, yellow halter, male abdomen with T2-5 shiny black except for slightly microtomentose middle of T2-3 and anterior margin of T4.
Male coloration and vestiture: frons subshiny black, lunule yellow, basoflagellomere basomedially orange, face greyish microtomentose, palpus red, tip black; thorax with mesonotum subshiny black, scutellum and pleura same, wing hyaline, veins brown, brown spot at tip of vein R1 very weak, calypter white with yellow or brown margin, halter yellow, legs black except for yellow tips of tibiae and basitarsi; abdomen with T2-5 shiny black except for slightly microtomentose middle of T2-3 and anterior margin of T4. Female coloration and vestiture: halter yellow, abdomen with T1-4 brown microtomentose except for lateral sides, T5 shiny.
Morphology. Head: frons with 2 orbital and 2 frontal setae, anterior frontal seta medioclinate, the setula between the two orbital setae is frequently enlarged to 0.8 the length of the orbital setae and the setula between the two frontal setae is sometimes enlarged to the same length as the frontal setae. In males frons 1.9x as wide at posterior margin than at base of antenna, arista about 3.9x as long as basoflagellomere wide, pubescence on arista very short, posterior eye margin without notch but narrow emargination (2oc).
Thorax: 2 dc, 1 prsc, 1 pprn, 1+0.9+0.5+0.5 prs, 3 keps setae, posterior prsc as long as posterior dc, seta between posterior prsc and posterior dc absent. Wing with vein R4+5 and M1 converging (2.7), and ultimate section of vein M1 2.3x as long as penultimate section. Fore femur normal setulose, tibial organ absent.
Male abdomen: posteromedial triangular projection of T1 into T2 weak. Tergal chaetotaxy: T2 anterolateral corner with more than 3 lines of setae, T2-5 posterior and lateral margins setulose. S5 0.9x as long as wide, 1.5x as long and 1.1x as wide as S4, roughly circular, posterior margin indented, strongly setulose with short setae. Male genitalia with apical seta on cercus longer than epandrial setae, 1 seta on subepandrial plate, surstylus 0.5x as long as epandrium high, not dilated apically, posterior margin very slightly incurved, 1.5x as long as wide, structure of lateral surface honeycomb-like, medial surface without setulae.
Special characters: setae short and thin; palpus ventroapically strongly setulose.
Body length: 1.9-4.5 mm; wing length: 1.9-3.2 mm.
